Joe Schilling meets promotional newcomer Hisaki Kato at Bellator 139

Joe Schilling said in a recent interview that he’ll compete in consecutive MMA bouts for the first time since 2008 when he returns to action at Bellator 139 on June 26. Now he has an opponent in place.

Schilling (2-4 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) will make a three-month turnaround from his Bellator 136 loss to Rafael Carvalho when he competes against promotional newcomer Hisaki Kato (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA).

Bellator 139 takes place at Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kan. The main card airs on Spike TV following prelims on MMAjunkie.

Schilling also recently revealed he plans to spend a portion of his training camp at American Top Team in Florida alongside several UFC and Bellator veterans. He’s trained with the likes of Nick and Nate Diaz, among others, in the past.

“I’ll be at American Top Team for three weeks,” Schilling said. “I’m going to be sparring with Thiago Alves for his fight with Carlos Condit (at UFC Fight Night 67) and working a lot with their wrestling team and (Muhammed) ‘King Mo’ (Lawal) out there.”

Schilling has earned the majority of his professional success in kickboxing. His MMA career, however, has been a rollercoaster of results. He first crossed over in January 2008 and went 1-4 in a nine-month stretch. He didn’t return to the sport until his Bellator MMA debut in November, when he scored a “Knockout of the Year” candidate against Melvin Manhoef.

The 31-year-old then returned to kickboxing before he returned to Bellator in April. He suffered a controversial split-decision loss to Carvalho in what Schilling admits was a frustrating and disappointing defeat. He said he’s determined to improve before his next fight.

“I’m not the person who loses a fight and says, ‘I’m not going to do this sh-t anymore,’” Schilling said. “I just figure out what I need to do different. … I’m going to work this out.”

The latest Bellator 139 card now includes:

Cheick Kongo vs. Alexander Volkov
Pat Curran vs. Goiti Yamauchi
John Alessio vs. David Rickels
Joe Schilling vs. Hisaki Kato
