Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan returns to the ring at Its Showtime Tenerife!

As you all should know by know, I am a huge Kickboxing fan. Well, obviously I’m a huge fan of any sport in which two people hit each other in the face and kick each other in the head. I’m a simple man with simple tastes and I find that Kickboxing and Muay Thai satisfy those simple needs. It’s a simple sport to understand yet contains very elegant and complex underlying techniques that take years of practice and/or study for anyone to truly appreciate. Giorgio Petrosyan is simply one of those fighters that understands all of this sport’s complexities and executes all of its techniques with absolute perfection. Petrosyan is so good at what he does that he makes all Kickboxing techniques seem absolutely effortless. He systematically breaks fighters down, yet looks like he has barely broken a sweat while doing so. In Muay Thai, fighters like Buakaw Por Pramuk and Saenchai Sinbimuaythai come to mind as they are two of many fighters that make Thai boxing look much to easy. Subsequently, they also make many of the seasoned fighters who face them look like novices. In the world of Kickboxing (K-1, Its Showtime, Dutch Kickboxing) Giorgio Petrosyan is their equivalent.

The only kink in Petrosyan’s armor, seems to be his ability to break his own hand on everyone of his opponent’s head and/or faces. He seems to injure his hand in pretty much everyone of his fights as of late, the most recent being his bout against Hinata Watanabe at Its Showtime Japan this past July. He was originally slated to fight on It’s Showtime’s Fast & Furious 70 kg tournament but much to the delight of Holland’s Robin Van Roosmalen, injured his hand thus giving the Dutchman the chance to put on a truly stellar run in the tournament that ultimately saw him winning the title.

On November 12th in Tenerife, Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan makes his way back into the It’s Showtime ring and will be given a stiff test as he faces off with Spain’s Zeben Diaz. Now many of you may not have heard of Diaz, truth be told I hadn’t heard of him either until I caught his last fight against Yavuz Kayabasi during the last It’s Showtime event held in Spain. Diaz demonstrated some very crisp boxing, lots of power, as well as some solid kicking prowess and while he has no where near the technical acumen of Petrosyan, this fight definitely looks to be entertaining.

Hopefully, Petrosyan succeeds in coming out of the Diaz fight without injury as he is scheduled to take on Congolese-Dutch and flying knee enthusiast Chris Ngimbi for the It’s Showtime 70 kg World Title. Needless to say, it’s good to see Giorgio Petrosyan back in the ring after a brief layoff due to injury. If you aren’t a fan of It’s Showtime rules Kickboxing, you should be! While I love Muay Thai, I also love Dutch/K-1 style Kickboxing. They are to me the be all and end all of combat sports, the “pillars of civilization” to put it eloquently.

Also on the November 12th card in Tenerife, Danyo Ilunga looks to defend his 95 kg title against Spain’s own Loren Javier Jorge. Impressive and new It’s Showtime 61 kg champion Javier Hernandez will fight in a non title contest against Dutch-Surinamese kickboxer Sergio Wielzen. Also Dutch-Surinamese standout Murthel Gorenhart will try to get back on track after his KO loss to Artem Levin by locking horns with Spaniard, Santi Gonzales.
