IT’S SHOWTIME introduces new weight category

While K1 has recently expanded their two weightclasses by adding a -63kg division (instead of the lightheavyweight class everyone was waiting for…), It’s Showtime just announced to add another new class to their already existing divisions.
This pressrelease was posted on their official website and other related media:

IT’S SHOWTIME introduces new weight category

IT’S SHOWTIME has decided to introduce a new weight category: 73kg Max.
With a new weight class comes a new world title as well.

The first contenders for the new title are Yohan Lidon from France and Marat Grigorian from Armenia.
This world title fight will take place on May 14 in Lyon, France on ‘Kader Marouf presents IT’S SHOWTIME’.

The reason for this new weight class is that a lot of fighters are too heavy to make the cut to 70kg and at the same time they are too light to fight on 77kg.

In the first place I was a bit surprised by this announcement, since the 70 and 77 kg classes seem to be quit close to each other. Nevertheless this new division is all in benefit for the fighters, since they can now fight at a weight which suits them best. We’ve all heard the problems a fighter can get when trying to loose too much weight and even trying to gain weight in order to challenge a certain fighter or win a belt.
So a simple solution like this is more than welcome. What they do need to look out for is enough talent to fill the division. But since the sport keeps growing more and more new fighters will appear for us to watch.

…now if only K1 would create that lightheavyweight division.
